Sotheby’s Finest and Rarest Wines – September 25, 2015

I sat down to write this post and my girlfriend, sitting beside me, said, I don’t understand how you can look through so many listings, it looks so boring. A fair point. So let me take some of the legwork out for you and show you where to look.

Today, we have a few more bargains that we’ve seen in past auctions. This is always good news for us. Remember, it costs around $10 to buy an entry level bottle of wine at retail (including taxes) so let’s use that as context. On to the lots.

Lot 154 – Château Brane Cantenac 1985 (12 bottles)

With an estimate of $50-60 a bottle for 30 year old wine, this is nothing to sneeze at. I’ve had incredible success with old bottles of Brane Cantenac as I’ve mentioned in other posts and think it is a very underrated wine. I highly recommend considering this lot for your collection/ drinking rack.

Lot 156, 157, and 158 – Château Ducru Beaucaillou 1981 (12 bottles), 1983 (12 bottles), and 1983 (12 bottles)

Another under the radar Bordeaux I’ve had great success with. I drank a 1990 recently and the company I drank it with was blown away. These are definitely aggressively priced and are probably a bit past their drinking window, but will still be worth trying. This may go a bit lower because it is an off year from a more sneaky producer. These lots are roughly $80-90 a bottle.

Lot 173 – Château Beychevelle 1975 (12 bottles)

At $50 bucks a bottle, I think this is really worth the risk. It’s old and definitely could be really interesting. I’m a buyer at this price for something so old and rare.

Lot 234 – Assorted Wine

I have no idea how to characterize this lot. It is odds and ends which typically means people will have no idea what to do and can mean that we can sneak in with a low bid and win. I like winning when people have no idea what is going on. I’ll take the risk with a few bucks and learn about some weird wines.

Lot 248 – California Assorted Wine

Another lot of some assorted wine from California. I really enjoy Kistler, they make such a quality wine. This again we could get for cheap, less than $30 a bottle. At that price, this could be a fun way to learn about wine with friends.

Lot 493 – Assorted Romanée from 1960s

Wine from the 1960 for less than $100 per bottle. What a price. Nothing else to say here. Buy and enjoy, these are ready to drink!

Lot 552 – Assorted White Burgundy from Joseph Drouhin (10 bottles)

Drouhin is a fantastic maker and you don’t seen the wine up for sale very often. Definitely great bottles and worth buying at these prices. Another lot I highly recommend.

Lot 633 – Beaulieu Vineyard, Georges de Latour, Private Reserve Vertical (12 bottles)

A very reputable maker from Napa in vertical format for roughly $55-75 a bottle. This is definitely a great lot to learn a lot about this maker.

Lot 670, 671, 672, 673, 674, and 675 – Pax Syrah Assorted Lots (12 bottles each)

$20-$45 a bottle cannot be beat. This a great everyday drinker or lot for a casual tasting party. Why would you not want this lot at these prices.

Lot 900 – Assorted Hermitage (9 bottles)

How can we get prices like this and how can we resist buying. Look in the catalog to see what I’m saying. This is $150-250 for the entire lot. Jaboulet is so damn good. We must buy at these prices.

Good luck tomorrow and look at the ending at some of those Italian wines. Super cheap! Just so many well priced lots today. Do some digging and post your thoughts in the comments.
